Michael Douglas, the Wall Street and Solitary Man actor with several Golden Globes and Academy Awards under his belt, will donate his time to create a public service announcement (PSA) on behalf of the Oral Cancer Foundation (OCF), a non-profit organization that provides news and information to those affected by the disease. Beginning in June, the PSA will air nationally to help educate the public about the importance of annual screenings to catch oral cancers in their early, survivable stages.
Back in 2010, the focus shifted from Douglas' successful career to his sudden diagnosis of stage IV squamous cell carcinoma oral cancer. After a long, arduous battle with cancer, including intense radiation and chemotherapy treatments, he is now cancer-free.
Now in remission, Douglas is the perfect spokesperson for early detection and oral cancer screening. Douglas will contribute to the lack of public awareness about oral cancer, which is why the death toll is particularly high. When found in its early stages, oral cancer has an 80 to 90% survival rate.
In many cases, a high profile celebrity can turn an unnoticed problem into front-page news.
With Douglas on this campaign, there will definitely be a spike in oral cancer awareness.
